Fanfics as Original Stories

Description

This is one thing I've been told by a friend that I can actually agree with. This isn't an ANTI-fanfic stamp, but rather an opinion (like most stamps). I just thought about this while working on RoD today (see below to understand why).

Fanfics are fun and easy to create in most cases. I say easy because you have the world and material right there to build off of without having to think too much about that. All you do is create the OC. At the same time though, the OC opens a lot for development and brings in new, original ideas to help make them more unique. And sometimes OCs in fanfics go so far they look like they could be out of an original story (or in some cases the concepts alone or the concepts as well as the OC(s)).

Way back when I was a kid and had started into fanfiction, I created my own story. This was about the time when OoT was new to the N64. Despite being scared to hell and back by redeads when I reached the timeskip area of the game (it was years before I went back and finished the game btw), I had my own little story in mind. As I did when I was a kid, I put my imaginary friends into the story I had thought of. While my story pretty much mirrored OoT, I was having fun with it. When I was about 14 though, I took my story and a lot of the original concepts and characters and turned it into an original story. That old Zelda fanfic story became my original fantasy story, "Rise of Darkness". Nothing of the original story remains the same other than the basic plot.

If you put so much time and effort into a fanfiction, introducing self-made concepts, there's a good chance you can take the characters and story you created out of fanbase and make it original. If you ask me, I think it's more rewarding to have an original story. Then you can escape the fanbase(s) and all the troubles/restrictions. You can call everything yours rightfully for instance (well, as long as things aren't too close to fanbase anyway). It's more rewarding to have someone say, "Hey, I like your stuff!" when it's all your material that you developed. At least I think it is.

It might be hard to develop an original story, but it's something that's well worth the effort. You don't HAVE to do this though. If you're more content using official material from a fandom, then go ahead and do so! Originality is sometimes a rare thing to find in fanbases after all.

Fan fics suck. Nuff said. Just be freaking original.
